The Explorer Antinori
and the Reserach Centre on Biodiversity
The Orazio Antinori (Perugia 1811-1882 Ankober) was one of the founders of Italian Geographical Society and was its Secretary-General. In 1876, the Society appointed him to lead the “Great Expedition to the Equatorial Lakes” and entered Ethiopia in that capacity. In 1877, he started a “Geographical Station” at Lit Marefia in Ankober on land assigned by King Menelik. He passed away in 1882 in Let Marefia, where his remains have been still lying. Italians consider Orazio Antinori as the “Father” of the Italian explorers in Africa. In his memory, a research centre on biodiversity will be established in Ankober. To this effect, Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 14.10.2008 in Ankober between Ankober Woreda Development Association and the Antinori delegation led by Prof. Bruno Romano on behalf of The Centre of Athenaeum for the Scientific Museum (CAMS) of the University of Perugia and Societa Geograpfica Italiana. AWDA thanks engineer Terrefe Ras Work, our Board member and ardent supporter of development of Ankober for working hard in facilitating this support with the team of the University of Perrugia.
